Attendance&participation |
20% |
Attendance & participation means coming on time and participating enthusiastically, congenially, and respectfully. I will take attendance. There will be a penalty for lateness. Surfing the internet on your iphone or computer does not count as participation! |

Assignments |

Assignments include responses to weekly readings, weekly individual and group translations, and exercises, analyses and activities, like creating your own page on Translator’s Cafe. Many of these things are due before class on CEIBA. |

Independent translation and presentation |
20% |
For the independent translation and presentation you have to find someone who will pay you to translate something. If you end up doing a lot of work on it I can reweight the distribution, taking away from Assignments and giving to the Project. You have to negotiate a rate, functioning as a market agent if possible, though the client may offer you the going rate or a non-negotiable rate. You have to complete the translation in a professional manner, both the translation itself and the contextual performance. You might have to bill the client. Ideally you will report this on your taxes, though you probably won’t have to pay anything. If you try to translate into English, then you may need to find someone to help you with your English, and it won’t be me. Finally, you have to present on your experience in class. |

Midterm and final |

The midterm and final may cover the readings, but will certainly include a written speed translation, for which you may or may not be allowed to use translation aids. |
